Battling Crocodiles on the

Way to School

Most American school children dread waking up early for the morning school bus. But that is nothing compared to the obstacles children face setting out to school in northern Zimbabwe. Out by the Angwa River, children trekking to and from school daily must cross crocodile-infested waters. You can imagine how much these children want to go to school to take such risks.

One such kid is 12-year-old Hardlife Kawara. On his way home from school, he and some friends were washing in the river when a crocodile attacked him. His friends got scared and ran away, but his brave brother grabbed his waist and held on tight while the crocodile took a tighter hold of Hardlife's leg and tried to pull him under the water. In the fight for Hardlife's survival, his leg was lost but his life was saved.

With orthopedic care and a prosthetic leg provided by

Save the Children's health clinic, Hardlife is back on his feet and in good spirits despite his incredible ordeal. What is even more amazing is that after getting care, he returned home intent on going back to school.

Now, Save the Children holds workshops in the community to teach children how to protect themselves and avoid crocodile and lion attacks

A maioria dos americanos escola dread crianças acordar cedopara o ônibus escolar pela manhã. Mas isso não é nada comparado ao que as crianças enfrentam obstáculos de sair paraa escola no norte do Zimbabwe. Pelo Rio Angwa, as crianças de trekking para a escola diariamente tem que atravessar águas infestadas de crocodilos. Você pode imaginar o quanto essascrianças querem ir à escola para assumir tais riscos.

Uma destas crianças é de 12-year-old Hardlife Kawara. No caminho para casa da escola, ele e alguns amigos estavam lavando no rio quando um crocodilo o atacou. Seus amigos se assustou e fugiu, mas seu irmão corajoso agarrou sua cintura e manteve-se firme enquanto o crocodilo deu um apertado porão deperna Hardlife e tentou puxá-lo sob a água. Na luta pela sobrevivência Hardlife, sua perna foi perdida, mas sua vida foi salva.

Com os cuidados ortopédicos e uma perna protética fornecidos pelo
Salvar a clínica infantil saúde, Hardlife está de volta em seus pés e de bom humor, apesar de sua provação incrível. O que é aindamais surpreendente é que depois de receber atendimento, ele voltou para casa no intuito de voltar à escola.

Agora, Save the Children realiza oficinas na comunidade paraensinar as crianças como se proteger e evitar ataques decrocodilo e leão.
